There are many approaches to treating high blood pressure. Many people choose to use complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) as a treatment approach. More and more physicians are incorporating lifestyle changes and integrative medicine, combining CAM and conventional medicine where their is scientific evidence for safety and effectiveness. Acupuncture has been the subject of serious, on-going research, and the evidence is now coming in.

How To Choose A Blood Pressure Monitor
I've decided that going to the grocery store to check my blood pressure defeats the purpose if I am tempted to grab a coffee and pastry on the way out! I found this video helpful.
While I had always thought the wrist units would be the easiest, after some research and some reviews, I just ordered the Lifesource UA-853ACP Premium Stand-Up Blood Pressure Monitor
from Amazon. I'll let you know how it works!

How Low Is High in High Blood Pressure
A lot of charts and brochures I've looked at use the term "pre-hypertension" to describe systolic blood pressure between 130 and 140. Sort of like a yellow light - "I can still have that slice of pizza and cut back on the bad stuff tomorrow."
Science loves to puncture rationalizations. A recent study used 1111 non-diabetic patients aged 55 years or older with a systolic blood pressure of 150 or higher were recruited in Italy. Patients were randomly assigned to a target systolic blood pressure of less than 140 or less than 130.
The results were published recently in The Lancet:

Although the number of events of clinical outcome was small, coronary revascularisation and new-onset atrial fibrillation were significantly less frequent in the tight - control group . . . the results lend support to a lower blood pressure goal than is recommended at present.
Getting started curing my high blood pressure!
Okay, I'm getting serious about my high blood pressure! My doctor wants me on meds now, but I am determined to get it down on my own. I've found something called the DASH diet online, apparently there are specific foods that will help (chocolate is one, so we are on a good start).
I plan on putting up how I do and what I find.
Starting average BP: 144/95
